Don’t Let Your Past Rob You Of Your Future

– Aaron Cruz (Sikeston Children/Youth)

Philippians 3:13 (NIV)
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Like Scrooge, we can all look back on some of the choices we made that has shaped us into the person we are today. And maybe, like Scrooge, we live life with regrets thinking “if only.” If only I did this or that…if only I didn’t say that…if only…
Maybe you are sitting here and you are allowing your past to rob you of the joy God has for you today…the future that God has for you. If that is the case then FORGET your past!
You might be saying “but you have no idea what I have done in my past!”
If the devil could use anyone’s past against him, it would be Paul (found in Acts). The devil could remind him that he had persecuted the early church and caused many deaths (including Stephen). Paul had done many terrible things that were hard to forget. But he had a revelation of God’s awesome, amazing forgiveness and he could say “forgetting what is behind me…I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me.”
God loves you and will forgive you of all your sin. In Hebrews 10:17 he declares that “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”
After Paul forgot his past, received God in his life and pressed forward, he then traveled preaching and teaching, seeing many of Gods miracles.
So like Paul, you can forget your past and the wrongs you have done. God can take the pain and tears and transform them into the miracle of your future. He can abundantly restore to you all that you have lost. He can cause all things, even really bad events of your past, to work together for your good. Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
God’s Words says in Isaiah 58:8, “the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.” His glory will cover your entire past. Whatever you have done, wherever you go, His glory will cover your past. It is no longer the same past that you know of because His glory has made it clean. Your past is past. It has been wiped clean. It is gone! So don’t let your past rob you of your future any longer!
